He was a man wholly devoted to discipleship training. After founding SaRang Community Church in 1978, he has been constantly nurturing lay leaders to be mature, more future-oriented and passionate just like Jesus Christ. As he says Pastor Oak could see problems and concerns that the laity struggle with through discipleship training, and how to cope with them in struggle with the word of God. His book titled 'Called to Awaken the Laity'(1984) is the essence of his discipleship training ministry. The book sparked the discipleship training in Korean Churches by adapting the training to the church environment, while it was only regarded as mere training activity pursued mission organizations. SaRang Community Church set a new standard of ministry philosophy model and showed how the discipleship training can bear fruits in the lives of lay believers. SaRang constantly gained reputation as healthy and influential church among both domestic and foreign denominations and mission organizations through its devoted disciple making ministry.
